“It is usually the case that people gravitate to services that match their interests and their needs. Some of the more popular subjects on Pinterest are likely to be especially interesting to women, such as food, fashion, interior decorating and design,” said Lee Rainie, Director of the Pew Internet & American Life Project, and co-author of the study....... Food is the fastest growing category on Pinterest and generates the most repins...... To put Pinterest’s user base into perspective, Pew researchers found that 66% of U.S. adults are on Facebook, 20% are on LinkedIn, and 16% are on Twitter. Pinterest has surpassed Tumblr, which is used by 5% of U.S. adults. Instagram has also developed a sizable user base, with 12% of all adults now using the mobile photo-sharing app.Source

Path Is In China, Why Not Facebook?
I wonder if the closed nature of Path makes it more palatable to the communist party honchos, but it makes no sense to let Path in and keep Facebook out. Both are so very similar in what you can do with them. On Facebook you can have 5,000 friends, on Path only 150. Used to be 50.
Or is Path too small to not have been noticed yet?
Dave Morin Says China Is Path’s Second Biggest Country
A lot of the early growth with Path 2.0 was in Japan and Korea, and Path’s second largest user base is in China, he said. Things have been picking up in the United States, too, especially in “these nice metro pockets.” .... photosharing remains the most popular activity. Music-sharing recently surged ahead to number two spot, overtaking the ability to announce when you fall asleep and wake up

Facebook Eating Into Its Ecosystem

I think it is but natural for Facebook to eat up into its ecosystem. Instagram owed no small amount of its user base growth to the fact that it used the social graphs on Facebook to spread the word. And guess what happened.

Apple And Twitter

Apple may invest "hundreds of millions" in Twitter
Apple investing hundreds of millions in Twitter would be like when Microsoft invested hundreds of millions in Facebook. That was a smart move. That money grew. This money will also grow.
And I am glad Apple is also coming around to Facebook integration.

Twitter Is A Technology Company
SUN VALLEY, ID - JULY 10: Jack Dorsey, creator of Twitter founder and CEO of Square, arrives for the Allen & Company Sun Valley Conference on July 10, 2012 in Sun Valley, Idaho. Warren Buffett, Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg have been invited to attend the conference which begins Tuesday. (Image credit: Getty Images via @daylife) |
Twitter is some variation of both. “I think of the company is a technology company that is in the media business,” Mr. Costolo told a room full of editors and reporters. “Our business is an advertising business, we don’t sell technology.” .... the company does not have any reporters or a newsroom, and almost half of its 1,300 employees are engineers, focused on building the technology that runs Twitter and inventing new features for the service. .... “I don’t need to be or want to be in the content business.” ...... Twitter employees who work with celebrities, politicians, athletes and media outlets to hone the best use of the service. “We call them V.I.T.’s internally, Very Important Tweeters .... Costolo still sees the company as a communication platform above all else.Twitter pours almost all its resources into engineering. And so it is a technology company. Twitter users produce content. True. But Twitter Inc. does not.
But that answer is true only when you ask to pick. If you don't bother asking if Twitter is a technology company or a media company, then you realize those demarcations are perhaps not that relevant. It is both. For Twitter Inc. it is a technology company. For the hundreds of millions of Twitter users it is a media company. It is a communication company. Twitter does many things that a telephone days, only better.
To ask if Twitter is a technology or a media company is a false question.
