Google Photos

Google Plus has been my favorite photo sharing app. I have liked the instant upload, the auto upload thing, I have liked the lots of space thing. I have liked the easy share thing. And now, instead of giving me nightmares by sunsetting Google Plus, as was the rumor, Google gives me Google Photos. I am thrilled. I want storage to be free. Unlimited.

But free is just the starting point. Google Photos takes photo storage and sharing to a whole new level. A Gmail for photos is a good description.

Twitter's Growth Rate Accelerating?

They say that about the universe. Not only is it expanding, the rate at which it is expanding is accelerating.

Twitter Passes 200M Monthly Active Users, A 42% Increase Over 9 Months

This does not surprise me. Twitter can come across as geeky. But once you know how to use it, it is actually more delightful than Facebook. I am glad I am not being forced, but if you were to force me to pick between the two, I'd pick Twitter.

But the experience can be simplified further. And photo filters on Twitter would be a big hit, I think. One huge blind spot Instagram has is it is not on the web.

I have not yet joined Instagram because my first smartphone is still on its way. But if Twitter filters show up I might not even join Instagram. Except that I am on Facebook, and if there is closer integration I might have joined by default.

No, Biz, Twitter Has Real Issues

I still don't understand why I can't access all my tweets, why all my tweets don't show up in Google search results, why I can't embed multiple tweets at once. Why can't I search through all tweets, mine and that of others?

NEW YORK, NY - APRIL 09: In this photo illustration, the photo-sharing app Instagram fan page is seen on the Facebook website on the Apple Safari web browser on April 9, 2012 in New York City. Looks like the Facebook acquisition has been good for the Instagram user base. It has doubled. I think the growth rate has accelerated since the acquisition.

Instagram hits 80 million users, a 30M increase since
acquisition, nearly 4B photos shared
Facebook sees the value in the network as it is, a photo creation machine with a lot of user love. .... the YouTube of photos
Google left YouTube alone. Facebook perhaps will leave Instagram alone.

Instagram On The Web

Instagram For The Web Coming Soon? Online ‘View Profile’ Link Spotted In The Wild
You can’t take a desktop experience and shove it into a 3-by-4-in screen. It’s a very different behavior pattern. It’s a very different browse pattern. People interact with their phones very differently than they do with their PCs and I think that when you design from the ground up with mobile in mind, you create a very different product than going the other way.
Instagram took too much time to get on the Android platform, and it is a mistake it is not on the web already. But better late than never. Mobile is where the action is, but you ignore the web at your peril.

Instagram's attempt to get on the web will be a good way to mesh the service into its now ownner: Facebook. As is well known Facebook struggles in the mobile space.

If Instagram will have a hard time adopting the web, the two services will have a higher chance of melding.
