JD Vance just sharply undercut the Trump team’s ICE shooting narrative It wasn’t just that the agent was justified in shooting 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good because he legitimately feared her running him over. It was that the woman “willfully and viciously ran over” the agent, President Donald Trump said. It was an act of “domestic terrorism,” according to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem......... State and local officials have disputed the shooting was in self-defense. Videos of the shooting reviewed by CNN show nuance, and it remains unclear exactly what took place beforehand........... Well, only about 24 hours after the Trump administration debuted these maximalist claims Wednesday, Vice President JD Vance sharply undercut them. ........ In a press briefing Thursday at the White House, Vance mostly toed the administration’s line in standing strongly behind the ICE agent and even suggesting the woman was part of some kind of left-wing “network.” ........ But when a reporter challenged Vance on how he knew this was deliberate, Vance conceded that it wasn’t 100% clear, allowing that maybe she was indeed just scared and perhaps wasn’t actually targeting the agent. ........... And it’s impossible for this to have been “domestic terrorism” if it wasn’t willful. Terrorism entails an attempt to use violence and fear to coerce political action. ........... He said that Good had “aimed her car at a law enforcement officer” and cast her as part of a “left-wing network to attack, to dox, to assault and to make it impossible for our ICE officers to do their job.”

The Mad King’s Madness Deepens Trump wants war, war and more war – even against Americans .......... Things are not going well politically for Donald Trump. The polls show him underwater on every major issue. ......... He recently lamented that the Republicans will do badly in the midterms and even floated the idea that midterms should be canceled. ............ And as January 6th 2021 showed, Trump simply can’t stand political rejection. He will do anything, use any tool or any person at his disposal, to obliterate the sources of that rejection. ................ So as we head into the 2026 midterm season, the best way to understand U.S. policy is that it’s in the pursuit of one crucial objective: Propping up Trump’s fragile ego. ............ What was the motivation for the abduction of Nicolás Maduro? It wasn’t about drugs, which were always an obvious pretense. By Trump’s own account it wasn’t about democracy. Trump talks a lot about oil, but Venezuela’s heavy, hard-to-process oil and its decrepit oil infrastructure aren’t big prizes. The Financial Timesreports that U.S. oil companies won’t invest in Venezuela unless they receive firm guarantees.

One investor told the paper, “No one wants to go in there when a random fucking tweet can change the entire foreign policy of the country.”

.............. The real purpose of the abduction, surely, was to give Trump an opportunity to strut around and act tough. But this ego gratification, like a sugar rush, won’t last long. ......... And now the story of the moment is the atrocity in Minneapolis, where, on Wednesday, an ICE agent killedRenee Nicole Good by shooting her in the head......... Trump and his minions responded by flatly lying about what happened. But their accounts have been refuted by video evidence which show an out-of-control ICE agent gunning down a woman who was simply trying to get away from a frightening situation. ............ public revulsion over Good’s murder and Trump’s mendacity are high and growing. ......... A president who actually cared about the welfare of those he governs would have taken Good’s killing as an indication that his deportation tactics have veered wildly and tragically off course. He would have called for a halt of ICE actions and made sure there would be an objective and timely federal investigation into this national tragedy. ......... for Trump, ICE’s violent lawlessness is a feature, not a bug. ........... Sending armed, masked, poorly trained, masked and out-of-control armed thugs into blue cities is, in effect, a war on Americans, just as January 6thwas a war on American institutions. In effect, Trump would rather savage his own people than be held accountable for his actions. ............. And when one set of lies doesn’t work, he switches tactics – changing the topic, deflecting, and spouting even more lies. Thus, just hours after Good’s death, Trump proclaimed that he was seeking a huge increase in military spending: ......... Trump’s assertion that he arrived at an immediate 50% increase in the military budget after “long and difficult negotiations” is yet another lie. ......... There’s been no indication whatsoever that a massive increase in defense spending was on anyone’s agenda before he suddenly posted about it on Truth Social. ........... it’s clear that Trump’s announcement was yet another exercise in self-aggrandizement, as well as an attempt to grab the headlines away from Good’s killing. ......... the sugar rush of Maduro’s capture has left him wanting more and more military validation, particularly as his poll numbers tank. ......... Admiral Alvin Holsey, an honorable man, did – stand down and refuse an illegal order. .......... Here’s a warning to the Republicans: if you continue to allow this man to perpetrate war against his own people with impunity through the actions of ICE, you will be remembered as cowards and hypocrites. Here’s a warning to all his other enablers: if you do not do something to stop this madman, you will go down in history as traitors to this country. ........ And here’s a warning to those directly perpetrating Trump-directed atrocities: He will not be in power forever, and I expect and hope that you will be held accountable, personally, and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

The Constitution Prohibits Trump’s War on Blue States This will be one of the major legal fights to come in the Trump regime. ......... What does Trump have against Minnesota? Not only is ICE causing mayhem in Minneapolis, but Trump is halting hundreds of millions of dollars in federal funding for social services programs there, according to a Tuesday announcement from Health and Human Services......... It’s not just Minnesota. Trump is also stopping billions in funding for social services in Colorado, Illinois, New York, and California. ........ Why? Could it be because all of them are led by Democrats and inhabited by voters who overwhelmingly rejected Trump in 2024? ........... It’s not the first time Trump has openly penalized “blue” states. What’s new is how blatant his vindictiveness toward blue states has become. ......... Angry at Colorado’s votes against him in three successive elections and at its refusal to free Tina Peters — the former clerk of Mesa County, who was convicted in 2024 of tampering with voting machines under her control in a failed plot to prove they had been used to rig the 2020 election against Trump — Trump has cut off transportation money to Colorado, relocated the military’s Space Command, vowed to dismantle a major climate and weather research center located there, and rejected disaster relief for rural counties hammered by floods and wildfires. .............. Two weeks ago Trump used the first veto of his second term to kill a pipeline project that had achieved bipartisan congressional support, to provide clean drinking water to Colorado’s parched eastern plains. (Trump’s action enraged Republican congresswoman and formerly dedicated Trumper Lauren Boebert, who stated: “Nothing says America First like denying clean drinking water to 50,000 people in southeast Colorado, many of whom voted for him in all three elections.”) .............. If there were any doubts about Trump’s sentiments toward Colorado, he posted a New Year’s Eve message telling Colorado Governor Jared Polis, a Democrat, and Daniel P. Rubinstein, the Republican district attorney in Mesa County who prosecuted Ms. Peters, to “rot in Hell,” adding “I wish them only the worst.” ............ In early December, Justice Department lawyers openly admitted that Trump withheld Department of Energy grants to Minnesota and other states according to “whether a grantee’s address was located in a State that tends to elect and/or has recently elected Democratic candidates in state and national elections.” ........ It’s the first time the Trump regime clearly acknowledged in court that which states get what depends on whether most people in a state voted for or against him. .............. Punishing states based on whom their residents voted for directly violates the 14th Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause, which requires that the government treat citizens equally under the law: No “State [shall] deprive … to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.” ........... Penalizing a state for how its citizens vote also violates the First Amendment’s guarantee of freedom of speech. Voting is one of the most basic forms of speech in a democracy; it cannot be abridged or punished depending on for whom one votes. ............ And it violates a president’s duty under the Constitution to “take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed.” At the least, this requires that a president apply the law in a nonpartisan way. Congress may award grants or benefits to certain states and not others, but this power is reserved for Congress, not the president. ............. The issue will almost certainly end up in the Supreme Court. Although my expectations for our highest court could not be much lower, I’d be surprised if the justices sided with Trump here. .......... Trump has made it clear he regards himself as president only of the people who voted for him. But that’s not how the Constitution works. Nor is it how American democracy works.
