Google: 25% Of North American Internet Traffic

That number is just mind boggling. I think that puts the onus on Google to take the country into the gigabit Internet era all on its own.

Google Now Serves 25 Percent of North American Internet Traffic
Three years ago, the company’s services accounted for about 6 percent of the internet’s traffic. .... more than 62 percent of the smartphones, laptops, video streamers, and other devices that tap into the internet from throughout North America connect to Google at least once a day. ..... The lion’s share of it comes from YouTube. But Google traffic involving search, analytics, web apps, and advertising is far from insignificant. .... Google is big and getting massive. .... To handle its growth, Google has been on a building binge. It now has data centers on four continents. All this work has been getting a lot of attention. But the tech titan is also hip-deep in another type of build-out, one that’s largely gone under the radar. ..... Google has added thousands of servers — called Google Global Cache servers — to ISPs around the world. These servers store the most popular content from Google’s network — a YouTube video that’s going viral right now or apps from the Android marketplace, for example — then serve it directly from the ISP’s data center, rather than streaming it all the way from Google’s data center. These servers were in a handful of North American ISPs three years ago. Today, they’re in 80 percent of them ..... the world’s leader in infrastructure magic

Ingress: High Level Stuff

Ingress Tips

(1) We Are Google's Ants

Google has deployed Ingress upon us because it wants to crowdsource the perfecting of Google Maps to hyperlocation, my guess. And that's fine by me. That does not take away from the fact that it is just a great game. I think this war game could emerge a major force for global peace. If you play Ingress you have friends all over the world already.

(2) Ingress-Work-Life Balance

You have heard of the work-life balance thing. Now there is a major Ingress-Work-Life balance issue. If you are not careful this game can totally suck you in. Hours pass by and you are still hacking. You want to go hack just one more Portal only one block away.

(3) Level 8 Socializing

After I hit Level 8 a whole new world opened up for me. I started meeting people. The best thing about hitting Level 8 is being able to attend Flash Level 8 Farm events. You end up with a lot of high level ammo with which to go cause major mayhem.

(4) Bump Points

Like there are Action Points, there ought be BP, bump points. You get those for meeting fellow players in person. You bump the two phones, the phones need not touch. You could bump one player max once per day. Otherwise the game has a major gender bias, I think.

(5) Only One Side

If you think about it, there is only one side. Officially it is two sides, but if the idea is to level up, there is but one side. Your opponents ("enemy" in the game) help you level up really fast. You are not building permanent structures, although it is possible to defend territory. There are parts of the city that look permanently blue, other parts look permanently green. But even those parts switch sides pretty often. It is like the sun looks quiet and beautiful with naked eyes. But we all know atom bombs are being exploded all over it, every second, multitude times a second. The "territories" are the same way.

(6) Ingress, Like Gmail

Gmail is fun, it is great, but it is not complex. Since it is my conjecture that this game is designed to help Google perfect Google Maps, it will not be made too complex. Actually at some level they are pretty much done building it. It is supposed to be a fun, easy, free, global game that just about anyone can play and have fun. Those waiting for a Level 9 to emerge wait in vain. My guess.

(7) Google+ And Ingress

Maybe the game already has Bump Points, it is called Google Plus. The social aspects of the game can not be quantified. How people meet each other, whether or not they want to get to know more of each other, those are social aspects perhaps best left to Google+ and events people organize through that platform.

(8) Physical Exercise And Socializing

If you are a knowledge worker tied to your computer, this game can help you leave your desk and go play. Go walk, get some exercise. Go meet new people. But know that this is not chess. This is not meant to be complex. There are not that many complex strategies possible. You go hack, and that is it pretty much.

How I Just Made Two Purchases

Last night in Union Square I met a fellow Ingress player called Omar, Ingress name Slomar. We talked. I griped about "battery life." He suggested I get an external battery.

Today I googled around. Then I gave up. The choices were too confusing. I was gonna wait.

Then I did the near daily thing of visiting TechMeme. From there I ended up at this news story.

Google must act quickly on libellous Blogger posts, says appeal court

At the bottom of the news story was this ad.

It was a near perfect price for a perfect product, something I really needed to get. The ad did what my Google searches were not able to do.

So I proceeded to place the order.

While doing so Amazon said they would give me a free 30 day trial on Amazon Prime, if I accepted, the product would get free two day shipping. I opted in for the two day free shipping.

Then I have been browsing around their movie catalog. It is quite amazing. I think I am going to stay with Amazon Prime after the month long free trial is over. It is $79 per year. I could easily watch 50 movies in one year. And I guess you get to borrow one book a month for free. I am not a frequent Amazon shopper. But free shipping is enticing. I am now more likely to search on Amazon before elsewhere for some future purchases. I am locked in a little I guess, but I am not unhappy about it.

Here Google and Amazon did not compete. They provided me with a seamless experience. This is sound capitalism. The consumer won. I won.

So Glad To Be Podcasting

If this can be called podcasting.

It started with this post at TechCrunch: Google Integrates Third-Party Web Apps More Deeply Into Google Drive.

I was reading it on my phone this morning, and I got excited. I fired up my laptop, and went to Google Drive and quickly integrated a whole bunch of apps. I created a floor plan using FloorPlanner. And I was feeling good about being able to edit video in Google Drive. Then I happened upon audio.

On second try I was able to use an app that feels like podcasting. I record my talk on the phone, save it over to Google Drive, from there I edited it with TwistedWave, the app on Google Drive, which then allowed me to share it to SoundCloud, which allowed me to embed it to my blog, this blog.

For the longest time video has felt easier than audio. I guess the music industry casts a jaundiced look upon the landscape. And so app developers stay away in fear. But I have just wanted to be able to record and share my own voice with the ease I can share words I type.

Hint: this should be a simple feature in Blogger's mobile app.

And so, welcome to this podcast, if it can be called that: Social Media Week Is Upon Us.
