This TV spectrum thing is more promising than satellites and drones. Drones might be best for the least populated parts of the world.

Microsoft plans to provide free internet access across India

the firm has proposed to use the "white space" - the unused spectrum between two TV channels - to provide free connectivity to large sections of the Indian population. ...... The 200-300 MHz spectrum band available in the white space can reach up to 10 km compared to 100 metres range provided by Wifi ..... This spectrum belongs mainly to Doordarshan and the government and is not used at all. The firm has sought clearance from the government for a pilot project in two districts ..... The programme would be implemented in phases from this year till 2018 and ensure that government services are available to citizens electronically.

replacing heavy aircraft windows with uber-light smartscreen panels to cut fuel consumption and slash air fares ..... a windowless plane that nonetheless allows passengers to see what’s going on outside, as well as checking their email and surfing the net.

The Only Way Google Can Grow Like Crazy

The only way Google can grow like crazy - and crazy is double digits - year in year out is if it gets a few more billion people online fast. Universal internet access is still Google's best bet, a better bet than Google Glass - duh! - and the Google Car. It is imaginable when one company dominated the PC operating system, but it is harder to explain why one company dominates online search. You were told growing up the competition was only one click away. But Google does. And so no matter how you play it, Google benefits simply by getting more people online. As in, it can simply keep offering the services it offers, and bring in three more billion people online, and it will have passed 500 billion in market value, and that 500 is a conservative estimate. I am surprised it is spending only one billion on satellites. Google should spend 10 billion, maybe 20 billion, and get everybody online already, like within a year, or two, before Obama passes out of office. This is not charity yo, this is big business. Waiting would hurt. If Google takes 10 years to get everybody online, there is no telling another search engine will not show up. 10 years are a long time in tech innovation. Maybe Jack Ma has a cousin or two. This is called printing money. This is called zero risk taking. This is harvest time for Google. The hard work has already been done, and the money is sitting in the bank like banana.

For every billion Google spends to get more of the world's people online, its market value is going to go up by at least two, maybe five, sometimes 10. Bhagat's Google Law, if you need a name for the easy math.

Why only land and countries, I believe oceans should also be covered. The signals need not be as strong, but it makes no sense to leave them behind.

How Google Could Disrupt Global Internet Delivery by Satellite

if Google could beam Internet connectivity to countries that have only a single ISP—often one controlled by a government—and very high prices for Internet connectivity, “that could be a game changer for a huge swath of the globe” ..... O3b satellites orbit at a relatively low altitude of about 8,000 kilometers, and the company says this means a more-tolerable 150-millisecond delay coverage to latitudes up to 45 degrees north or south of the equator, a swath of territory inhabited by 70 percent of the world’s population.

Philanthropy is good business for Google. If it takes internet access to 100 million new people, that will be 100 million new people conducting searches on Google. The monetization part is in-built. And so I wonder why Google is not even more muscular in its attempts.

This is my idea of a moonshot.

This is super duper exciting. Does anyone know when 100% penetration is expected? With this immigration reform can take as long as it wants in America. This should have been part of the 2009 stimulus package.
