Google Australia’s Engineering Director Explains Why We Don’t Need Google Fiber
Alan Noble is the engineering director of Google Australia, and he says that there’s absolutely no need for Google Fiber Down Under. .... Noble said that there was just no need for Google to become an ISP in Australia because eventually, everyone would have Gigabit speeds .... In theory, the NBN should fulfill that need in Australia. Restricting the NBN to 100Mbps speeds is purely a commercial decision, not a technical one. There is no technical reason the NBN could not run at Gbps speedsWhen I read the headline I thought the guy might say there is no need for fiber, wireless is the better option. But he did not say that.

All Google Fiber customers also get 1TB of free storage. If they buy TV service for an extra $50 a month, Google will throw in a $200 Nexus 7 tablet to be used as a remote control. Google is also giving away -- for free -- a package that offers 5Mbps downstream and 1Mbps upstream. ...... Google was able to get prices so low, in part, because it designed and built all the hardware for the system itself. This is a good reminder that although Google wasn't a consumer electronics company until recently, Google has actually been designing hardware for its data centers for more than a decade. It was this data center efficiency that allowed Gmail to offer way more free storage than competitors back in 2004....... just like Gmail unlocked an enterprise business, Fiber could unlock a whole new business as an ISP and TV provider..... Now, we just need Google to roll out Fiber to the rest of the country.If Google can figure out a way to use snooping technology to serve well targeted ads it could make internet access ad supported, and it could take top speeds to all corners of the world. It would not be limited by Fiber. Heck, it could use satellite technology as necessary.
This is the single most important thing Google could do. At globally universal broadband, Google surpasses the nation state in power. It also becomes a trillion dollar company in the process.
That "5Mbps downstream and 1Mbps upstream" free deal is a big deal.
At 1 GB, YouTube has no more disadvantages to traditional TV. Video ads fetch more.

this network isn’t a charity case .... goal is to bring the same efficiencies that have helped create cheaper, smaller and more powerful computers and create a cost and improvement curve for broadband access that resembles the curves for compute storage ..... what Google has done here has fundamentally lowered the cost of building and deploying a network ..... it will pummel existing ISPs on price and service ..... From the infrastructure on the back end to the TV and Wi-Fi routers in the home, Google has built its own stuff. .... taking the most basic elements of a network and assembling them into custom gear, much like it does on the data center side. ..... Google has built its own hard drive to act as a DVR, a TV box to provide channels and a network box that acts as a modem and provides Wi-Fi connectivity in the home ...... a QR code that a technician will scan. ..... purchasing the gigabit Internet service for $70 a month ..... the current average household broadband speed was only slightly faster than it was 16 years ago .... Google wants to provide such high-speed Internet to flex its muscle in Washington, where policy makers have been criticized for being slow to deliver national broadband ..... “fiberhoods” ..... a free 5-megabit-per-second broadband connection .... Google believed “there’s no need for caps.” ..... “I’ve never met someone who’s said ‘My Internet connection is too fast.’” ...... if two cars left Kansas City for New York at the same time, the one traveling 100 times faster would reach New York before the other car even left MissouriI wish Google entered the ISP space for good.
Just like Google Search is ad supported, Google Fiber should also be ad supported. Use snooping technology to serve just the right ads. And at gigabit speeds an ISP could serve ads like TV stations do.
There is so much potential.
